One of Russia's foremost world-class museums, it would not be an overstatement to say this building is the top reason why most visitors come to Saint Petersburg. The State Hermitage Museum consists of seven buildings, among which the most important is the Winter Palace, constructed by the finest European technical experts at the time. This former imperial residence connects to the Small Hermitage, the Grand Hermitage and the New Hermitage via passageways and the complex includes the Hermitage Theater, the General Staff Building and the Menshikov Palace.
Featuring an enormous collection from the Romanov dynasty and collections placed under state control after the revolution, the museum displays them by region and period. |

| In the town of Tsarskoye Selo meaning ∪The Emperor's Town" which used to house palaces of royal families for two centuries, the Catherine Palace is particularly impressive for its gorgeous Russian baroque architecture, 310 meters in length and painted an elegant, cool blue. The must-see spot is the restored Amber Room, which used to be a complete chamber decoration of amber panels backed with gold leaf and mirrors. Parts of the Amber Room were looted during the World War II by Nazi Germany and their whereabouts remain a mystery, yet the search continues. Its reconstruction work completed in 2003, the Catherine Park continues to attract a throng of visitors as one of the area's prominent tourist spots. |

With a height of 101.5 m and total weight of 300,000 tons, St. Issac's Cathedral is one of the former Russian empire's largest and overwhelming monuments. Overlooking both Decembrists and Issac Squares, the majestic cathedral dominates the city skyline and boasts a luxurious and rich decor of precious stones such as marble, malachite, lapis lazuli and others, as well as gold. A spiral stairway leads up to an observation deck with a spectacular bird's-eye view of the entirety of Saint Petersburg.

| Named after the Russian dramatist, Alexander Ostrovsky, this square features many structures predominantly designed by Carlo Rossi, a Russian architect of Italian origin. The front yard presents a monument to Catherine the Great with its pedestal carved with the figures of her royal dignitaries. Though the Empress was adored by the people of Saint Petersburg for her efforts to improve their life and education, surprisingly, this is the only site to hold her statue in the city. This is a lovely place attracting citizens playing chess and portrait artists. |
