Construction of this leading building of Brazil, also known as the ¡Ègolden church¡É was begun in 1708 and took 20 years to complete.It has gold carvings at the front and gold dust is lavishly used for its interior walls and ceilings.Carvings on the wooden altar are also a must-see.

Walking along the Rua Alfredo de Brito from the Praca Terreiro de Jesus, you will come to the Praca Pelourinho.Colonial buildings in pastel pink and yellow line the streets facing the stone-paved square.The blue building is the old slave market, where instruments of torture used at the time still remain.

Also known as a church of miracles, the Igreja de Nossa Senhor do Bonfim is said to have been built in order to show the gratitude of a Portuguese ship captain whose ship nearly sank, but made it to Salvador with the help of the God.The captain is now worshipped as a guardian angel of the Bahians.
