Salvador, whose Old City area was registered as a World Heritage Site in 1985, was the seat of the Governor-General's office for 200 years between the 16th and 18th centuries, during Brazil¡Çs Portuguese colonial era.As the center of the nation, the city prospered until the capital was relocated to Rio de Janeiro in 1763.

There are no direct flights from Japan to Brazil.The only services without changing planes are those via Los Angeles or New York¡Çs JFK Airport, provided by Varig Brazilian Airlines and Japan Airlines.Varig Brazilian Airlines operates four code-sharing flights with ANA and JAL operates three from Narita Airport to Sao Paulo weekly.It is necessary to change planes if you take Canadian Airlines International, American Airlines or Aerolineas Argentinas.

From the Airport to the City Area |

Salvador International Airport is complete with tourist information desks, travel agents and other facilities and English-speaking assistance is also available.Buses to the Centro area can be caught just outside the terminal.They operate to Praca da Se in Centro every half hour between 6:00 and 21:00.

| Buses to Centro operate from the local bus stop in front of the terminal.Salvador is connected with Sao Paulo and other major cities in Brazil by long-distance buses.The bus terminal offers a tourist information desk, bank, cafeteria, supermarket and other facilities.

| It takes about half an hour from the airport to Centro, and the fare is roughly R$65 to 75.Use of a taxi is recommended especially if you arrive in Salvador at night. |
