Mumbai, known as Bombay until 1995, is a major city in India, on the splendid Arabian Sea. After coming under British rule in the 17th century, it flourished as a center of commerce and industry. Many historical structures remain. Given religious and commercial freedom, the city became a magnet for a multiethnic population. Mumbai boasts a chaotic beauty. |

| As the gateway to Western India, Mumbai is connected by rail to all other parts of India. The major stations in Mumbai are Chhatrapati Shiraji Terminus, Mumbai Central and Churchgate. Both the Central Railway and the Western Railway serve these stations, so be sure to confirm the railway before boarding. Trains occasionally run behind schedule in India, so allow extra time when making travel plans. |

| Cabs are the major mode of transportation after buses. They∏re metered and relatively safe. To avoid disputes, make sure the driver starts the meter as soon as your trip begins. Air-conditioned cabs are dispatched when called. Arrange this with your hotel concierge. |

| Connecting the Fort District and the suburbs, the Suburban Train is very popular. It runs on three lines, with the one between Churchgate and Mumbai Central being the most convenient. Avoid riding during peak hours (7 to 9 a.m. and 6 to 8 p.m.). |
