Compared to the western region where there is a transportation system connecting the megalopolises of Taipei and Kaohsiung, in the eastern region - blocked by the central mountain range reaching to the sky-transportation is inconvenient and development tends to be delayed.
However, Hualien is blessed with numerous scenic sites, precisely because it is surrounded by imposing and magnificent nature.

Taroko Gorge is a leading popular tourist spot of Taiwan and there are many enjoyments unique to the eastern region such as the wizardry of nature viewed from the coastline, secluded and high-quality hot springs spots, rafting and whale and dolphin watching.
As well, Hualien-the largest city in the eastern region of Taiwan-has developed as one of the four largest trade ports and is also famous as a marble city. The sidewalks are paved with marble and the even the park benches are made out of marble.

There are no direct flights from Japan to Hualien and it is necessary to transfer in Taipei or Kaohsiung. There are domestic flights from Taipei, Kaohsiung and Taichung. It is about 40 minutes from Taipei, 55 minutes from Kaohsiung and 50 minutes from Taichung by plane.
By rail, there is the Zi-Qiang express from Taipei and Taitung. The train takes about three hours from Taipei and two hours and 40 minutes from Taitung.

It is possible to get to the downtown from the airport by taxi or shuttle bus every half hour or every hour. It takes about 25 minutes to the bus terminal by bus, or about 15 minutes by taxi.
From the Hualien railway station, there are buses and taxi. It takes about 10 to 15 minutes to reach the bus terminal.Rental bicycle is recommended for getting around town.
