The Binnenhof plays the central role in the politics of the Netherlands, and the area is lined with buildings built between the 13th to 17th centuries. The oldest of these buildings is the parliament house, known as ¡ÈRidderzaal¡É (Knights¡Çs Hall). Rising at the center of the square, this church-like brick building was built in 1280 by Count Floris V. Guards wearing bright uniforms line up at the opening ceremony of the parliament on the third Tuesday of September every year, and the arrival of Queen Beatrix in her golden coach is reminiscent of something out of a movie. |

George Maduro took part in the resistance against the invasion of the Netherlands by the German military during World War II and died in a Nazi concentration camp. His parents created the miniature city named after their son in the hope for world peace. The extensive site of approximately 6,600 m2 has models of major structures in the Netherlands on a 1:25 scale. |
|
| Tourist attractions, windmills, canals, churches, palaces and castles are all replicated in minute detail. Surprisingly, many of these models, such as cars, boats and merry-go-rounds, actually move. The miniature city is entertaining for both children and adult visitors alike. In the evening, the atmosphere changes as the area is lit up with 50,000 light bulbs. |
